International art-residence "START"

Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre together with Lithuanian National Drama Theatre announce the first international art-residence "START" for young directors from Ukraine and Lithuania, which will take place in Kyiv from May 15 to May 28, 2023.

International art-residence "START" is a joint project of two National Theatres, which will unite young directors from Ukraine and Lithuania.

On the basis of the residence participants will implement their creative ideas and as a result one of the Ukrainian directors will have the opportunity to stage a performance in the National theatre in Vilnius, and one of the Lithuanian directors in the Lesya Ukrainka National theatre in Kyiv.

The purpose of the Art Residence is to find young talented directors.

Gabrielė Uršulė Bartoševičiūtė
Uršulė Barto
Lithuanian theatre director. She worked as a freelance theatre director in various theatres in Lithuania, Germany and Iceland.
 
In her works, Uršulė explores female identity within the faltering of patriarchal model of the world, the influence of cultural and societal movements onto society’s hierarchical processes.

Director, theatre and film actor, playwriter. Works at Vilnius Old Theatre.
 
In 2022, he staged the play "The Play That Didn't Take Place" about the tragedy of the Mariupol theater, for which he was nominated for the Lithuanian National Theater Award "Golden Stage Cross".

3 years of theatre directing experience and 8 years in acting.
 
In 2022 as a part of ProEnglishTheater of Ukraine she created the play Bloom in Violence about gender violence, the performance that has been in 3 European countries, collecting donations for women in Ukraine during war.

Ukrainian director and playwriter, founder of the theater school Bilyts Art Center.
 
He works as a stage director at the Maria Zankovetska National Theatre.
Ivan Orlenko
Ivan Orlenko
Theatre and film director, screenwriter, et cetera.
 
Was born on Herzena street in deli №22. The works have been awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics, the Union of the Ukrainian Film Critics, the Ukrainian Film Academy and many others.
Yevhen Shcherban

26 years old. Kyiv.
 
Graduated from the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University as a theatre and film actor.
He worked as an actor in the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre.
He teaches at The Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University, course of Nataliia Dolia.

Viacheslav Yushkov
Screenwriter, playwriter, director, sometimes a metamodernist.
 
The creator of the satirical dramedy "The Normal Russian Woman". In the pilot episode, the Russian Tamara turns to Stepan Bandera and asks him to surrender to Putin, which sets off a series of irreversible events on the Internet.

 

The beginning of the International Art Residence "START"
(May 15 - May 28, 2023)

Directors will be provided with a rehearsal space and all the necessary conditions for the realization of their ideas. Rehearsals will be scheduled before the start of residency and due to the director`s wishes.

Leaders of the two National Theatres will be invited to the show.

Based on the performance results, one director from Ukraine will be selected to stage the play in the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, and one director from Lithuania to stage in the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre for the 2023 or 2024 theater seasons.

The sketch created during the Art-Residence does not necessarily have to become the basis for a future performance on the stage of one of the National Theatres. With the agreement of the directorate, other material may be selected for the performance.
