What can a wall tell us – a wall that witnessed the birth of a performance and the destruction of an entire generation? What remains of theatre after a gunshot? What happens to a country after 1111 gunshots? The production “1111. THE THEATRE of Lesia and KURBAS” draws upon real events and myths of the “Executed Renaissance” period, as well as the story behind Les Kurbas’s creation of the production “Gas”.
The action unfolds on the theatre’s rear stage, against the backdrop of the grey brick wall of the former Bergonie Theatre, where Kurbas’s production once premiered. The space becomes not merely the setting, but an active participant in the performance itself: the wall continually transforms in meaning – from a theatrical backdrop into the symbol of an execution wall. The audience, sharing the same space as the actors, becomes part of the stage mechanism itself – participants in a living ritual in which the boundary between stage and auditorium dissolves.
