Over the 90-year history of our theater, the comedy Mrs Minister (1928), created by the great Serbian playwright B.Nusic (1864-1938), has found a bright and immaculately lively and witty comedy on its stage.
The characters of this comedy live in a calm environment with no strong winds, bad weather, earthquakes or any other natural disasters. This medium of the middle bourgeois is firmly separated by a dense wall from all those winds that sway society. All of them live in their own rooms, and the street became the whole world to them, something like a foreign country, and the events globally shaking the whole countries and continents, are only after-nap reading for them.
But suddenly from this very environment, as if in a lottery, one was taken by the hand and one such respectable, loyal wife and a good hostess were snatched up. It was Ms. Zhivka Popovich who unexpectedly ascended above a normal, seemingly stable life line. Prior to this, her husband, a conscientious middle-ranking official, received a salary, which was barely enough to live on. That makes them scramble, live from paycheck to paycheck, making small debts here and there, remake their old cloth...
And what happened suddenly? Mrs Zhivka’s husband was offered a minister's post. Yes, there is something that makes a poor woman’s head spin, accustomed to other rhythms, norms, rules of behaviour. An extensive field of activity opened up before Jivka, where vanity, eccentricity, greed, envy, and intolerance suddenly awoke.
The whole intrigue is based around the woman’s sudden makeover, her triumph and her bitter loss. The comedy of characters in its best traditions is perfectly combined with the comedy of humours.
